Installing, Upgrading, or Uninstalling Daqarta

Introduction:

The following information is displayed below the End User License Agreement when you run the Daqarta installer (DHsetup.EXE or DWsetup.EXE).

Default Installation:

By default, Daqarta is installed in:

    Program Files - Daqarta

Daqarta's own data files are installed in:

    Documents - Daqarta - App_Data

User-generated data will default to:

    Documents - Daqarta - User_Data

MIDI setups (.DQM files) are installed in:

    Documents - Daqarta - User_Data - MIDI_Setup

Circuit schematics and board layouts will be in:

    Documents - Daqarta - Circuits

Remote control utility programs will be in:

    Documents - Daqarta - Utility

This default installation will work for Administrator, Standard User, or Guest accounts under all Windows versions.

Custom Installation:

Removable Drives:

If you select a different folder via the Browse button on the Installation Folder screen, the program files will be installed to the specified folder, and App_Data, User_Data, Circuits, and Utility will be created as sub-folders of that instead of Documents.

You may use this approach to install Daqarta on a removable drive such as a USB flash memory stick. Note: The USB installation process may be very slow. The progress bar may appear to "hang" near the start, but be patient... the total install may take 2-3 minutes. (Actual operation of Daqarta should be fine.)

Note that there are special considerations so that Daqarta can find the proper calibration data if you run from the removable drive on different systems. See the discussion in the Help system under Auto-Calibration - Saving the Calibration.

(See Edit - Start Preferences - Sound Card Device Selects - Removable (USB) Sound Cards in the Daqarta Help system for more information.)

Note that the desktop shortcut created by this setup program will point to the installed location. You may wish to omit the Desktop and Start Menu Shortcuts (on the screen after this one) when you install to a portable drive, and just run by double-clicking on Daqarta.EXE on the portable drive.

Multiple-User Installations:

The default installation is available to multiple users on a single system. There is no need to install Daqarta separately for each; after the initial install, simply running Daqarta the first time from any account completes its installation for that account. All Daqarta folders will be created and maintained separately for each account under its own Documents - Daqarta folder.

However, the initial install only provides a desktop icon for the current account. To add the icon to the desktop of another account, you must first switch to that account. Then open Windows Explorer and navigate to Computer - C:Program Files (x86) - Daqarta, right-click on Daqarta.exe, and select Send To - Desktop (create shortcut).

Single-User Multiple Installations:

You may want multiple Daqarta installations even on a single-user system. This is not generally needed, since you can manage multiple configurations (such as different sound cards) with separate icons that invoke Daqarta with different parameters. This is the best approach if the configurations must share common data. (See Edit - Start Preferences - Sound Card Device Selects - Managing Multiple Devices in the Daqarta Help system for more information.)

True separate installations keep all data separate by default. This may be useful for separate projects conducted for different clients, for example, or for setups with very different external hardware.

To do this, just install to a different folder: On the Installation Folder screen, replace the default 'Daqarta' folder name with another, such as 'Daqarta2'. The installer will create and use App_Data, User_Data, Circuits, and Utility as sub-folders of that instead of under Documents. Note that the default folder location is in Program Files, so if you want to access any of these sub-folders manually (instead of from Daqarta) you will need to navigate to Program Files - Daqarta2 - User_Data (for example).

Note that this custom installation of Daqarta will be available to all users on a multi-user system. Unlike a default installation, when a different user first runs this Daqarta after the initial install, it will not set up user-specific Documents folders. Everything stays under the installation folder.

Upgrading or Re-Installing Daqarta:

You never need to uninstall Daqarta before installing a new version... just install right over the old one to preserve all your work. However, if you used a custom installation as discussed above, or for any other reason did not accept the default folder, then you must proceed with caution. If you want the new install to replace the old one, you must make sure that the same folder is used. The default Destination Folder will be:

    Program Files - Daqarta

For a new installation, that means that a sub-folder named Daqarta will be created under Program Files, and the Daqarta software will be installed into that sub-folder. Since that sub-folder already exists for an upgrade or re-install, the contents will simply be upgraded.

For a custom installation, everything works the same way... as long as you use the same name. If you know the name of the original install folder, edit the Destination Folder as needed. However, if you use the Browse button please note that the installer assumes you are selecting the parent folder level and will append 'Daqarta' to your selection. For example, suppose your prior install was to:

    Program Files - Daqarta2

If you use Browse and select that folder, the installer will show the Destination Folder as:

    Program Files - Daqarta2 - Daqarta

This will create a new sub-folder named Daqarta under Daqarta2 and create new App_Data, User_Data, Circuits, and Utility folders in that. The new installation will work fine, but prior files that you may have created in these folders won't appear without additional file navigation. To avoid that, just edit the the Destination Folder back to:

    Program Files - Daqarta2

Now the installer will detect that the destination sub-folder already exists, and its contents will simply be upgraded.

Uninstalling Daqarta:

Normally, you should not uninstall Daqarta before installing the latest version... just install it right over the existing version. This will preserve any calibration, Generator setup, or Macro files, as well as any data files you have created. In particular, it will also preserve your license key if you have already purchased Daqarta. If you have not purchased yet, the new installation will provide a new 30-day / 30-session trial period.

However, if you ever do need to completely uninstall Daqarta, and you used the default installation to Program Files on your hard drive, you can use the normal Windows method: Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.

The uninstaller will remove everything from the Program Files - Daqarta folder (including itself), plus the Documents - Daqarta - App_Data folder that holds setup, calibration, and initialization files, the Circuits folder that holds schematics and board layouts and the Utility folder that holds remote control utilities.

The uninstaller will then ask if you want to remove the Documents - Daqarta - User_Data folder, which is where any data files or MIDI setups created by Daqarta are stored by default. If you agree to this, then it will also remove the parent Documents - Daqarta folder, such that no trace of Daqarta remains on the system. If you want to keep User_Data, then the parent will be retained as well.

If you did not use the default installation, you will need to run the Daqarta uninstaller manually. If the custom installation was to some other location on your hard drive, right-click on the Daqarta desktop icon and select Properties - Shortcut then click on Find Target. Double-click Uninstall.EXE to run the uninstaller. Everything will be done as above.

If you installed to a removable drive, navigate to the Daqarta folder (or whatever custom name you chose) on that drive and run Uninstall.EXE from there. It will perform the same operations as noted above, on the appropriate folders.

Enjoy!
