Percussion Instrument Number

Controls: Sgram/PT Dialog >> Pitch-to-MIDI >> Percussion Setup
Changes: Iv=n
Table: General MIDI Percussion Instruments

The Percussion Setup allows up to 6 percussion sounds at a time, labeled A-F. Each has an Instrument Number (Inst #) control that allows selection of the desired sound. The name that corresponds to the selected number is shown on the adjacent Instrument On/Off button.

The General MIDI Percussion Instruments list shows the standard sounds that are available for most synthesizers. These are the names that are shown for the Instrument Number selections. Although numbers 0-127 are possible, only the 27-87 range is standardized and has associated names.

Your synth may support numbers outside that range, but they will be shown here only as "Unknown". Such sounds are perfectly acceptable to use, but be aware that they may not work on another synth, or they may produce entirely different results.

You can see the General MIDI Percussion Instruments list at any time by right-clicking the Instrument Number or Instrument On/Off controls for Instruments B through F. (Not Instrument A, which provides this control Help.)

Note: There are also percussion instruments available via tonal Voice Setups. See the General MIDI Instruments table, and look particularly at the groups labeled "Chromatic Percussion", "Percussive", and "Sound Effects". These are tuneable instruments that vary with note pitch. You can set the Voice Tempo Mode to Percussion, and use the Pattern Key plus the Note Pattern to set the pitch of the sound for each beat.

MIDI Changes Script:

Use Iv=n to set Instrument v Number to the value n, which may be any unsigned integer or valid expression, including current MIDI control values, random values, current computer keyboard states or mouse position, input or buffered notes, oscillators, and User Variables. The value will be limited to 0-127.

v must be a letter from A-F, case insensitive.

For example, IB=38 sets Instrument B to 38, which is Acoustic Snare.

Alternatively, use G to set all Instruments A-F at once.
